The Arenal volcano is a major tourist attraction in Costa Rica, and it is one of the most active volcanoes of Central America. Between the years 1500-1900, the Arenal Volcano remained silent and many considered it to be extinct. The local farmers referred to it as a mountain: Cerro Arenal (Arenal Mountain). Many of these farmers worked along the base of the volcano, and families also lived along the base.
One day on July 29, 1968 the Arenal Volcano suddenly erupted. The eruptions continued intensely for several days. These eruptions had killed 87 people and buried 3 small villages, the villages were: Tabacón, Pueblo Nuevo, and San Luís. The eruptions affected more than 80 miles of land, affecting crops, ruining property, and killing livestock. This was a very difficult situation for the people of Arenal. Between the years 1968 and 2010, the Arenal Volcano was very active. There were small eruptions what seemed almost every day. None of these eruptions, compared to the one that happened in 1968. Since the eruption in 1968, the local residents have been careful in building their farms too close to the volcano. At this present time, all towns and hotels are built and set at a safe distance from the volcano.
This volcano became one of Costa Rica's most visited natural attractions. While agriculture is still important to the region, tourism had more success and this became the main source of income for the area’s population. Many people that live near the Arenal volcano offer trips and tours to people that go visit Costa Rica. Because of this, Costa Rica is well known for having a volcano that is 5,480 ft. as a natural attraction. The explosion of 1968 was what made Costa Rica very known for having one of the most active volcanoes.
Other than being one of the most active volcanoes, it is also one of the youngest volcano. This volcano is estimated to be less than 7,500 years ago. Other than Arenal the volcano is also known as "Pan de Azúcar", "Canaste", "Volcan Costa Rica", "Volcan Río Frío" or "Guatusos Peak". Many people find it interesting that the volcano receives so much admiration. The people that live near Arenal really encourage others to go and see for themselves how beautiful Arenal is. The people from Arenal also encourage people to take the time and once the visitors see it they will not be let down.
In conclusion, Arenal is a major attraction from Costa Rica along with six other volcanoes. The eruption from 1968 greatly motivated for people to work together and take care of each other, they formed new villages and supported people that had family members that died in that period of time. Other than the eruption, the activeness of the volcano has motivated a lot of people to go and visit Costa Rica. Costa Rica receives most of its income from the touring that occurs all the time this income has overpassed the income that they receive from agriculture. We are all sure that the people that go visit Costa Rica, will not regret the decision and they will have the time of their lives.
